Hurtful words, threats, and controlling behavior

Being called names, threatened, or controlled is harmful — even when no one is hit. Words and threats can hurt and can be a sign of danger.

Everyday examples

  • Someone says they will hurt you, a pet, or someone you love.
  • Someone calls you stupid, worthless, or worse — often.
  • Someone controls who you see, what you wear, or where you go.

One next step

Tell a trusted adult, or contact a help line. You do not have to handle it alone.

Remember

  • Abuse is never a child's fault.
  • You do not have to collect proof before asking for help.
  • You are not responsible for stopping adult violence.
  • You do not have to physically intervene or protect everyone yourself.
  • You can care about someone and still need protection from them.
