What happens when you contact a support service
You can ask what will happen before you share details. Different services have different rules, so the next steps are not the same everywhere — and that is okay.
Everyday examples
- You can say, 'Before I explain, what might you have to share, and with whom?'
- A counselor may ask a few questions to understand how to help.
- Some professionals must report serious safety concerns to keep you safe.
One next step
Contact a help line or a trusted adult. Ask about privacy first if that feels safer.
Remember
- Abuse is never a child's fault.
- You do not have to collect proof before asking for help.
- You are not responsible for stopping adult violence.
- You do not have to physically intervene or protect everyone yourself.
- You can care about someone and still need protection from them.
In immediate danger, call 911 when it is safe to do so. Choosing any button on this site does not dispatch help or file a report.
