Worrying that asking for help could make things worse

It is normal to feel scared that asking could cause trouble. You can share that worry with the helper — they can plan safer steps with you.

Everyday examples

  • You worry the person who hurts you will find out.
  • You worry you will be taken away from people you love.
  • You worry about getting someone in trouble.

One next step

Tell the helper, 'I'm scared this could make things worse.' They can talk through what happens next.

Remember

  • Abuse is never a child's fault.
  • You do not have to collect proof before asking for help.
  • You are not responsible for stopping adult violence.
  • You do not have to physically intervene or protect everyone yourself.
  • You can care about someone and still need protection from them.

In immediate danger, call 911 when it is safe to do so. Choosing any button on this site does not dispatch help or file a report.
