A path toward support
What happens after I ask for help?
You can ask questions before sharing details. Different people have different responsibilities, so the next steps will not be the same everywhere.
In immediate danger, call 911 when it is safe to do so. Choosing any button on this site does not dispatch help or file a report.
Start with what you need
You might say you want someone to listen, help understanding a situation, or help finding another service. You can say that talking or being contacted at home could put you at risk.
Ask about privacy
Try: “What would you have to report? Who might you contact? Can you explain before we continue?” Teachers, clinicians, counselors, and hotlines may have duties to share safety concerns. No blanket promise of secrecy is possible.
Expect some questions
A counselor may ask enough to understand your concern and available support. You can say when a question is confusing or difficult. Official reporting agencies may need identifying information; requirements differ.
Discuss one next step
Ask: “What can I do next, and what if that doesn’t work?” A professional can explain options. Luke’s Light cannot promise a particular response, custody outcome, or living arrangement.
If help still feels out of reach
Try another qualified person and explain any new concerns. You do not need to keep repeating your story on this website. If there is immediate danger, use emergency assistance when safe.
I can’t call privately
Childhelp also offers text and web chat. Those can leave records too. If possible, speak with a trusted professional in person or use a device you believe is safer. If you are not in school, a healthcare professional or child-focused service may be another starting point.
A person to talk with
Childhelp supports children, teens, and adults concerned about a child. These options contact Childhelp, not Luke’s Light. Talking to a counselor is different from filing an official report.
Calls, texts, and websites may leave a record on your device. Use a device you believe is safer if you can. Ask what may need to be shared before explaining.
