What to say when asking for help

You do not need the perfect words. One short sentence is enough to start. The helper can ask questions from there.

Everyday examples

  • 'I need help with something happening at home.'
  • 'I'm scared, and I don't feel safe.'
  • 'Before I explain, can you tell me what you have to report?'

One next step

Practice saying one sentence out loud, or write it down. Then tell your trusted adult or a help line.

Remember

  • Abuse is never a child's fault.
  • You do not have to collect proof before asking for help.
  • You are not responsible for stopping adult violence.
  • You do not have to physically intervene or protect everyone yourself.
  • You can care about someone and still need protection from them.

In immediate danger, call 911 when it is safe to do so. Choosing any button on this site does not dispatch help or file a report.
